I think I'm just being overcautious and worried, but how often do healthy/well cared for bettas get sick?
In other words, do I need to keep a variety of meds/salt/PP/adjustable heaters/etc. on hand just in case, or am I good to just keep food/water parameters/filtration/tank size/heat/etc in the proper ranges, and they should be pretty healthy?

I've dealt with so many sick fish over the years that I think I'm hyper-concerned about anything happening to the current two. Of course, the ones before came form the petstore sick, these two are post-store healthy, but I still worry that they're going to come down with something...somehow. I don't add in plants or anything, don't use different water conditioners, don't change their food types (same brands of worms/flakes/and pellets), and I don't move things between tanks, so whatever they might get, it would originate within the tank itself and/or from them. Do fish get spontaneous diseases if they are otherwise healthy?

In other words, am I just being a fish-hypochondriac?
(Hoping the answer is yes. :)

How often does a healthy person get sick? ;) It's a question without a real answer. Each fish is different and will react to everything differently.

As for curing your worrying, feel free to stock up on any medicines that do not expire, like aquarium salt. Not sure if there's more that don't expire.
If you are keeping your tank clean then it's HIGHLY unlikely that any fish will come down with something that will kill them before you can run down to the store to get medicine.

Ahh, thanks so much. :) I know there are no guarantees, but I kept thinking that they live in a virtual bubble...nothing comes or goes except the water, and I'd like to believe that's pretty clean...I drink it... ;) So surely they can't get exposed to too much horrible stuff?

And thanks for the info about how long they can be sick before it's deadly. I didn't know if fish were like cats (sick cat=dead cat, horrible saying, but too often true) or if they could go a day or so with symptoms before treatment started. :)

Thanks for the information! :)
