Today I tried to do a flaring exercise for my betta fish by holding a mirror right up to the tank

and the betta fish just simply ignored it and did his usually business..........................

so how should i do it?

I have one of the floating mirrors which works for mine, because I think it looks more like there is another betta in the tank with them. But I could be wrong, I'm new!

If he doesn't react to his own reflection try floating another male in his tank either in the cup they come in or a baggie just keep an eye on them

I don't have another male betta, though i am planning to get one to fill up my empty tanks in the garage.

I find sometimes if they are exposed to another male all the time (like two cups too close together in the pet shop) they get used to it and won't flare at another male or their own reflection.

Don't do anything to try to get him to flare for at least a few days if not a week. Then try again and see if it works.

My newest boy Chicory flared at himself in the mirror behind where I had his tank originally - so much so that I finally put a book between his tank and the mirror. Since then, I haven't seen him flare till just a little while ago. I can lean close to the tank and he comes forward, and then will follow my hand and dance. But when I held a pen up for him to inspect, he flared at it bigtime.

A pen ~.^
