So about a month and a half ago, a friend of mine texted me to say that she got a betta! and then she sent me this photo of him in an unheated bowl. Immediately I was like hey how big is that bowl? and also you need a heater. The bowl turned out to be 2 gallons and my friend immediately went out and bought a heater and yelled at the people at Petco for lying to her. She also bought Omega One pellets, Prime, and some silk plants. I also advised a water change schedule and she stuck to it.

Today I get a text from her saying that she left her betta in her mother's care while she went on vacation with her boyfriend and came back to see that her mom had taken the fish out of the bowl and put him in a drinking cup with unconditioned tap water. Apparently her mother had broken the bowl when she tried to move it to another room. My friend freaked out and when to petco and bought him a filtered 5 gallon tank, a new heater and new plants.

She just told me that if her fish doesn't make it that she is going to cycle the tank and get a new fish.

Sweet! It's hard to get people to understand and care. My fish is here at the office with me, I constantly hear "I thought they like small spaces better?" It's a myth that has been taken as fact, which is very unfortunate! My fish is only in a 3 gallon, but I already have a 5 gallon cube, am just waiting on an amazon shipment :D I started with a 1 gallon rimless coverless tank... I've learned a lot from you folks!
Eek! Betta wasn't in the bowl when it broke, was he? "*if* he makes it" I hope he makes it. So glad your friend listened to you. She sounds like a good friend. I love that she went back to Petco and set them straight about the heater. I wish I was assertive like that.
It's amazing how much you can learn by experience in pet care. You just can't help but fall in love with them.
I tried to get my boyfriend into bettas, buy he thinks they are boring. One of my mom's friends has a 11 year old kid who had a betta in a half gallon tank. The betta died a month later. Turns out, he had the tank by the window and it was winter. I rescued that fish and gave her to him. The closest window is a yard away from my two five gallon tanks that stole my desk from me.
He wasn't in the bowl when it broke. Apparently the mother tried to do a water change and didn't know how and dropped the bowl. he was in a drinking up with unconditioned water.

However, he is doing fine! she sent me a video last night and he was swimming around his new lovely 5 gallon tank exploring everything!
Oh good! Glad to hear it. Good things come from broken bowls! Erm, something like that...
well i'm glad that bowl got broken, but for real why aren't those bowls plastic? i mean basically the only way to do a water change is to carry it to a sink, so who thought glass was a good idea?

Probably the same people who invented the "all in one betta ecosystem".
Probably the same people who invented the "all in one betta ecosystem".
haha true!
Some people just should't be inventors. I wonder if they keep bettas in bowls to prove how good of an idea it was.

Some people should't have pets.

Some people should't have ideas for pets.
