Being in college, people drink. No, problem, I get it. But I CAN'T STAND these girls on my floor who get drunk EVERY NIGHT.

5 minutes ago I heard the worst thing EVER:
"Oh my god this fish just doesn't die! I got Four Loko (an alcohol and energy drink mix) in the bowl last night!" Then LAUGHING! I don't even know if they CLEANED IT OUT!

I HATE these girls with a passion and now my heart just broke for this little guy. If it is the girl I think it is, she has a tiny bowl for him that I NEVER see her clean! I don't know any of these girls but I wish I could take him from her! UGH I'M SO FURIOUS

In other news: I'm applying to be an RA (Resident Assistant) who kind of takes care of the floor and enforces the rules in a dorm hall. As an assignment for the application, we have to design a program/event that we would use that is educational and fun. Since I am a HUGE betta enthusiast, and I know bettas are popular in college, I was going to do an information session on basic care and treatment of basic diseases, as well as advertising for this website. At the end, I would raffle off a betta and the basic needs.

Let's just say I am very energized to hold this event now!!!

Do you guys have any advice otherwise?!?!?! I'M SO PISSED!!!

Not sure exactly what to tell you other than why don't you point out to her how stupid her actions are. Offer to pay a little bit to take the the fish off her hands. I'd hate to see any animal in the hands of a stupid, irresponsible owner.

I'm in college and I know exactly the type of people that you are talking about. I don't understand why anyone would want to harm another creature, or why someone would get a pet and not take care of it.
My hall was having a meeting about spring break closing and my RA told everyone to take care of their fish because A LOT were left over winter break (luckily the RD adopted them all). One girl made a joke about having a mass flushing and everyone laughed. I've also heard a couple of kids laughing in the hall about how they "don't even feed (their) fish anymore." I really believe that humans are inherently evil.

It's so sad! Fish are living creatures too! :(

Pucky, rather than raffle off the actual betta, I'd just do the betta care kit. That way, someone who actually wants a betta will be able to choose their own, and someone who just wants to win something will have to actually spend out and maybe learn to care about a living creature.

offer to take the fish if she's sick of it(and if it's still alive). it really sickens me when people have that kind of attitude. :I

i... wouldn't give away a betta and supplies. few collage kids actually CARE about bettas and their needs. :I they'll get bored and flush it, or try to kill it, or just not care about it. >.>; sadly, the people on this forum, aren't common outside of this forum...

wow there messed up, the reason they neglect (IMO) is because she wants to show that she is all that, she dosen't care, she wants to feel that other people think she is bad*** :( sorry i wouldn't want to curse in this forum (the forum is to "clean" for that)
poor fishie, do your best to get the fishie before it is to late :(

Thank you, everyone, for feeling my angst. He's still alive, and this other girl I talk to on the floor, who keeps her betta in a 2gal too, is friends with the "bimbo" (as I call her) and is kind of keeping an eye on the Four Loko-ed fish.

revolution: Oh wow! That was terrible to leave them home for winter break. I don't know about everyone else's, but my winter break is 6 weeks long that's terrible! Poor babies...

IN OTHER NEWS...I did get that RA job. (23 openings from 104 applications) so I WILL be spreading the word about proper betta/fish care in the dorms, and since I will have my own room then for being an RA, start a proper fish foster home/orphanage with enough room. To spare! :D

Thank you guys for the tip: I do think it should be important for people to pick their own bettas and to actually go out and buy the fish with the proper supplies, so I will raffle supplies off. Thanks for the tips :)

Goodness I love this forum!

One thing that my college would do is take in bettas during school breaks if students couldn't bring them home. They would feed them for owners and if tanks were small enough and proper supplies were left, they would do small water changes. Maybe this could also be something you could do for your residents if you have to be on campus during breaks.

not surprised, i recently left college and it was a daily thing for my roommate and dorm-mates to drink and so on it got annoying, they did all sorts of stupid silly things wasn't even funny, all i could do is rage to my brother when i get home on the weekends because no one ever stopped them.

but on a happier note you now know your guy is a tough one i hope no long term effect will be done.

As an RA now, can you intervene directly on behalf of the poor betta that your dorm mate is trying to kill? That is, can you invoke your authority to take the fish from her and forbid her to get another? I don't know how hard you want to come down on this type of behavior, but you now have more sway with which to deal with it.
