My boy will stare at the water's surface, appear to be sizing it up, and make a little jump at the wall. It's almost like he sees something and is trying to eat/attack it, but there isn't anything there.

I really doubt it's a problem with the water. It's a filtered, heated 5 gal and I do one 50% and one 100% a week. The tap water here at the dorm does have some ammonia, but I've heard that Prime neutralizes that, so it should be fine unless I've been reading lies! D: He's super active, eats like a hog, and there's nothing unusual about his appearance.

He doesn't jump very high at all. Maybe he's seeing his reflection. Maybe he's hoping there will be more food in the mighty beyond, since I've had him jump for it a couple of times. Is this something I should worry about, or is he just a jumpy boy? :I

If it's obvious that he's staring at something and trying to reach it? I wouldn't worry. He very well may be seeing something teeny, and is determined to make sure it's not something edible. A water spot, hard water deposit, maybe even a snail baby!

If he were jumping at nothing, in the middle of the tank I'd be more worried about a water quality problem. But it sounds to me like it's clear he's seeing something. Even if you can't see it.

Just make sure the tank has a cover.
