I just bought a 6 Gallon tank for $5 from my local Op Shop. Though I haven’t checked it for leaks yet or cleaned it out, I’m gleefully planning what I can do with it, once I figure out how to make space to set it up.

I’ve been researching lighting for planted tanks online, and frankly, I think I’m more confused now than I was before.

To provide enough light for low to medium light plants, approximately how may watts would I need from an LED lighting unit for this tank? What would be too little and what would be too much?

External Dimensions: Length: 46cm (18.1 Inches), Height: 26cm (10.2 Inches), Width: 23cm (9 Inches). Approximately 6 Gallons, calculated from internal dimensions and practical water depth.

I always suggest the Finnex lighting. There are different kinds of lighting setups clip on and LED bar type. For the price Finnex Sting Ray Would be the one I would recommend. It is by far the best all around lighting. offering lighting for low to high light for small planted tanks. The bar type is adjustable in length and the 20 inch would fit the 18.1 inch tank with ease. Giving you the light you want with out having to worry about which plants would work with your lighting. Here are two links to Finnex lighting and the Finnex company that sells them.

I have used Finnex Planted plus in every tank I have for years and each time I get new tanks They are the first place I go to. You would need a glass canopy and that is easy to find on Amazon.

Those Finnex fixtures are certainly nice. They aren't available in my country though. Can import them, but I'd expect the exchange rates, international shipping and customs fees would make the price quite prohibitive. Hopefully I can find something equivalent.
