Hey all, anybody here have any experience with Ranchu/Lionchu?

I was just talking about Ranchus to my boyfriend last week, and what do you know, my LFS got a stock of little Lionhead Ranchus in :-D They're so cute!

I was considering getting one...I know 10 gallons is the minimum for one, but it's recommended to get a 20 gallon and go 10 gallons up for every additional goldfish. Can they be kept alone comfortably? Or should I get 2 to be safe?

Also do I need a sponge filter or anything? Or just an airstone?

Any tips? Thanks guys!

My best friend has goldies in her 75 gallon, mix of Ranchu, Pearlscale, Fantail/Ranchu mix, and a Blue. I would never ever put a goldfish of any type in a 10 gallon, even babies; they just produce so much waste. I recommend definitely sticking with a 20 or larger. Goldfish are social so two is usually good to start off with so I'd get at least a 30 gallon tank if you want to keep them comfortable. 20 is just too small unfortunately. I also recommend using canister filters and greatly over filter your tank. If you can afford it, get a filter that's rated for 75-100 gallons for a 30 gallon with two goldfish, plus aeration is a big thing too! A good high powered airpump or two-three small ones will do!

Goldfish are not cheap even though it may seem like it with all the myth surrounding them as well so just keep that in mind :) If you try to skimp out on some things, you'll end up with sick fish and trust me, we just went through a huge sickness with them and it was probably the worst thing we've ever experienced! It's always better to be prepared beforehand if you can of course so ask all the questions you need and we'll do our best to answer them for you! :-D And again, don't skimp out on equipment!

I may just have to hold out until I move out in the next year or so, I don't want to have the trouble of looking for apartments that accept a 30 gallon+ xD it's the only thing holding me back.

And yeah, the Lionchus at my LFS are $40 each by themselves xD not including me going out to buy a tank+food+filtration/airation. It's a nice thing to look forward to in the future I suppose!

Ah yeah, that is difficult to do. But yep! Jada is right! It's a good motivator and a great thing to look forward to! It's hard to be patient sometimes I know haha ^_^ That's where all my impulse buys come from >.<

But yeah, if you've got any questions still, we'd all be happy to help you out! :-D

Thanks Lil! :-D

I will most definitely do some more research and come back here if I'm questionable about anything. I love it when my fishes are comfortable and enjoying life and I hear Goldfish can live for a decade or more! My boyfriend doesn't know if he wants cats or dogs, so a few Ranchu would certainly be a wonderful replacement for a long-living pet  and I'm totally fine with still being fish crazy in my late 30s ;-)
