I'm delighted to find out that there's a betta fish community. On a whim, I bought a betta as a desk buddy and I fell in love. I've had Freddy for two or three months now and he is the smartest, most energetic and curious fish that there ever was. I had no idea betta fish had so much personality. I bought him a mystery snail as a pet a few weeks ago, and I love watching him watch the snail. My family and friends don't understand my fish love, so I'm just glad that there are other people I can tell about how awesome he is.

(My phone camera sucks, and he's impossible to get a good picture of. Every time he realizes I'm looking at him he starts begging for food.)

Hello and welcome to the forum!
Welcome to the world of aquarium keeping and Bettas as well!

Freddy is a beautiful boy and he sounds like a character.
Does your snail kid have a name by chance?

Some tricks to use for photos is to lure them up with food, get a small mirror to distract him, or find something he can focus on so you can snap a picture. Others will probably chime in with more ideas, these are just what works for me!

I'm glad you're enjoying Freddy, sometimes whims are the best decisions :)

Thanks! I'll try that technique for pictures. I'm extra happy today because just now I noticed he's building his first bubble nest since I got him. He's always seemed healthy and happy despite the lack of bubble nests, but I worried because that's like the first thing on the "how to tell if your betta is happy" lists. What a remarkable fish. I'm glad he's happy.

P.S. The snail is named Nancy.
