Male or female?

Was not sure of its gender since I first got this plakat betta a few months back. As it grew, I felt that it was most likely female. But recently, it started making quite a few bubble nests and I am confused all over again. Also, I can't see any obvious egg spot/ovipositor tube. The ventral fins of plakats are just not tell-tale enough for a beginner betta keeper like me.

Any take based on these series of pictures?

Thank you for any opinion and feedback! 😄

Hi, does the betta have an egg spot? Like in the middle of the ventral fins?

Oh sorry, I didnt notice that you dont see an egg spot. I think it might be a male because he's making bubble nests, but since there is no egg spot it probably is a male.

Thank you for the reply. I do suspect that it could be male, but was hoping it was female. Also, I heard that females could also make bubble nests, that it is not a male only trait. That was why I got confused 😅

Yea, females can make bubble nests. Akila has made bubble nests before and put her eggs up in it lol

Hmmm… my vote would be male, but this is a tricky one. The longer ventrals and lack of egg spot leads me to believe it is a male. However, the stockier body and lack of “beard” behind the gills make this fish look like a female. I would say male based off of the lack of egg spot, the longer ventrals, and the bubble nests (but females can make . But he does appear to have some “female” characteristics.

Lol it is quite confusing :') My female is definetely a female, but her ventrals are a bit longer than most females, but shorter than my male's.

Totally agree with you, which is why I am still unsure as well.. Guess we can call it a "non-binary" fish 😅😅😅
