Hi I'm new to Bettas and just got my first two Bettas today. I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this so I'm sorry if I posted this in the wrong place. Both are very young. One is actually still a baby so the gender is unknown and the other is known to be a Crowntail female (but a young one so I'm not sure if the gender is right). The Crowntail female is just around the size of a full grown guppy. I was wondering if that could help determine how old she was too? I am really curious on what the baby's gender would be. I know that bettas should not be put together so I was planning on putting them in different tanks but I set the two cups down next to each other and the two bettas were automatically going into attack mode. Their gills were sticking out and their fins were moving super fast as they stared at each other. I did not know they would do that even though they were in separate cups and it's a good thing they were! Right when I saw the Crowntail female I knew I wanted her. She was so full of life and was swimming around more actively than the others that were at the bottom of their cups. The baby is just so cute and colorful so I decided to get him/her.

The top one is a girl for sure, and a real cutie! I'm a sucker for crowntail females myself

I can't tell the gender of the baby (still can't tell the gender of my baby betta!) but it looks like a crowntail as well. It's got some nice crowning on its dorsal fin and tail already. If it's a girl, cuz they're so cute!
(but if it's a boy, YAY cuz they're so beautiful!)

Thank you everybody for the help! We decided to name the little one Moon. They survived their first night in their tanks! I was worried that they might not make it through. Well I wasn't too worried about Bora since she was swimming around actively & seem pretty healthy while Moon wasn't so active even when she was at the pet store still. I was confused on how to move them into their new tanks because they were in cups and I am used to moving fish that are in bags but this forum was very useful and I found a post about how to move them while in cups. I was wondering how high a betta can jump?

A good 2-3 inches up, sometimes higher.. and a few inches to the side.

The Cambodian female (Bora) looks to be a double crown tail- she has two rays on each main ray. I love Cambodians, the contrast of colors.

Moon is hard to say.. I don't see an egg spot on either of them in the pictures.
It may be the angle, but s/he actually looks to be malnourished and didn't get the proper nutrition while in the cup.

A lot of times, males won't grow their fins out much until they are in a larger home, away from others- it's a protection thing, just as some young males will have an egg spot in hopes to fool adult males into thinking they are females.
A male's fins won't be fully grown until around 7 months of age.

Did the cup say "Baby Betta"? If so, and depending upon size, you may have to treat them as fry.. sadly they recently started selling the babies, which have different needs then adults- a different diet specifically for their growing needs, usually warmer water at around 82-84*F, etc.

They are cuties though. Heated tank, weekly water changes and they should be just fine. Good luck to you and your new little ones!

Oh no that's not good! What kinds of foods would be good to give her enough nutrients to get her back in good health? Yes, the cup Moon was in did say 'Baby Betta'. The cup Bora was in didn't say that but the staff told us she was young and we could tell from how small she was.

Editted: Bora flares everytime she sees Moon swimming by but Moon doesn't flare back. She used to but now she does it for a lol bit or doesn't do it at all. Is there something wrong with her? They're both in separate tanks.

Your fish are cuties

As for flaring, Moon's pretty young, and some bettas are more placid than others. Or maybe she's just gotten used to Bora's presence. I wouldn't necessarily worry too much about it. You should keep an eye on her though if you do think there is something wrong.

For Moon there is a brand named New Fish Formula, NFL, and they have a small fish pellet, I think that works. There may be another one though, check with Myates or anyone else that will know. For both of their food, try to get them things that have high protein and the first ingredient is fish related, like krill, fish meal, stuff like that.

kfryman- Okay thank you! I'm currently feeding them New Life Spectrum Marine Formula. Is that okay for them too? I bought it because a staff at Petco suggested it but I know that sometimes they don't even know what they're talking about. Bora can eat it perfectly but Moon has a little bit of trouble trying to eat it since it's too big. I will try to go to the pet store asap to buy some New Fish Formula.

I had a baby betta myself. Now it's an adult female I fed her NLS small fish formula. The pellets are .5 mm, so they're super tiny and perfect for the mouth of a little betta! I got that recommendation here on the forums as well. Since she's made it so far, I'm sure they must be nutritious for babies. Good luck with little Moon! She's a cutie!

The bottom baby is most like a female. By that size, it'd be an obvious boy unless it were a dragonscale.

One of my bettas Ziggy-Bubblay has the egg spot but blows bubbles and had eggs in a bubble nest the other day, it has the fish experts i have asked baffled does anyone have an answers?? Is it a male or female?

Both Moon and Bora are growing so fast! I can see the egg spot on Bora for sure now but it's hard for me to examine Moon properly since she swims
soo fast! Bora does too but she slows down enough for me to look at her under belly. Moon is so active now that its hard to believe that Moon's the same betta I saw at Petco just laying there. I will update with pictures soon!
