Hi,

I just ran into this message board.
I have 2 bettas, one blue vt and one koi.
The blue vt is more territorial and aggressive, he killed one of my snails and he wouldn't stop flaring at the next one.
He is alot happier alone.

Overall, i think the VT bettas are more territorial.

Then I have the koi betta, he is super social, lives with a snail in a 3 g and loves attention from us.

Recently, I just got a 20g long tank, i decided to put 2 corys with him.
He loves hanging out and socializing with them.
After, i added a 3rd and a 4th one, all different sizes.
Not once has he flared at any of them even though they are bumming and swimming around him.
It's quite a sight! =)

Hello and welcome to the forums.

All bettas are territorial and aggression is an individual thing. Some bettas are just relaxed and will tolerate minor intrusions into their territory, others will see anything that moves as a threat. All we can do is put up with their little quirks and enjoy them.

Feel free to post around the forums.

As Veloran has said Aggression in betta is individual when it comes to a type or species. I have a VT that I have housed with one lone male guppy. The Guppy was in the tank to start and help the cycle in a new tank. I rescued the VT from Walmart and introduced him to his new home under cover of darkness. After being together now for a few months, this pair is inseparable. They eat together and sleep next to each other every night. They have their spats, and the guppy is missing some tail fin but he stays right with my VT. If anything would happen that either one was removed from the tank the other would get very upset and quit eating. So you have the same with your cory.

This being said I would not put tank mates with any of my other 4 betta. Only because they have never had anything else in the tank. So I don't push it.

Yeah, my betta is in a community tank and loves his Cory haha. You know they get a long well when they are always sharing each others food and there's no flaring or aggression haha. Sometimes the betta will practically lay on top of the cory.

My veiltail is also more on the aggressive side. I put 2 rasboras in there with him for a minute and while he never nipped at them, he would flare at them several times a day and do some light chasing. I took them out. haha.

Welcome moonchild. I'm new at this too. Just started having bettas May of this year. So yes, I have a koi and a veil tail betta. I started out just having a snail with each of the betta. Even though both flared at the snail at first, the koi (fluffy) just ignored the snail after a while. The vt would always flare at the snail despite us trying to divert his attention. I also noticed that fluffy loves attention and follow us around whenever we are close by. I observed him for a few months before I decided to go with cory tank mates. Since the cory cats, I have also added some baby silver mollies in the 20 long tank. On day 1, Fluffy did chase some of the molly frys around. One time he flared at one molly when they were too close to his food, but overall he leaves them alone. My most recent addition, is an oto, algae eater. Fluffy seems to enjoy having company now. 😃

VT is veiltail and refers to a specific tail type. Koi refers to the color of the betta and any tail type can have Koi coloring. Here's a link to some of our abbreviations https://www.bettafish.com/30-betta-fish-care/641377-betta-lingo-101-a.html Hope that helped!

My veiltail is in a 20 gal community tank with 8 cory cats and he mainly leaves them alone. I'll occasionally catch him following them around but for the most part he stays at the top of the tank and the cory cats stay at the bottom

your name

Wow, really? I never have met another person with my same name and spelling!! That's so cool. Mine is a halfmoon blue/turquoise betta fish. He's doing much better than when I first was here. I have learned so much from this forum. The Petsmart fish 'experts' have given me some not so great advice. But now i know what he needs and don't overfeed and his lovely fins are growing back. My mystery snail is ginormous now. At least 2.5 inches in length when he's stuck to the tank wall. he just had his first parboiled cucumbers which he worked on for hours. He's so happy and he and my little fish Bijou seem to totally love each other. I am relieved that my betta does not harm the snail or bite his antenna as I have heard some bettas can do that. Maybe because they were both tiny babies when I got them, that they are growing up as unlikely friends or siblings lol.
