I'm new to this forum, and I also wanted to tell you all about my 'little friend'.

Little friend, (yes that is his name.) is a turquoise crowntail betta. He has a black head, red ventral fins (if thats the name for the two fins that hang down just past his head) and red on his tail!. He swims on the side of the tank that i am closest to, swims all the time, (accept for when the lights are off, nap time, where he lies and sleeps under a plant.) He eats betta pellets and mosquito larvae and tropical fish food.
PHOTO TIME!

'How it came to be' :L
I first thought that Siamese Fighting Fish were just lazy and boring, as they sat there all day in the pet store, looking like they are dead.
My sister wanted one, and picked hers out from the small (and very expensive) pet store. I knew nothing about them, but I decided to buy one, 'in the moment' kind of decision.I looked at them all, they were mainly veil tails, but there was this little dude on the lower shelf, in the back that just caught my eye, I knew he was the one.I bought all that the pet store owners said I needed. They said he'd be fine in those little tanks.after a week, and after doing a bit of research, that little tank was actually really bad for my fish.I found a 14L tank at a larger, and cheaper pet store, which knew a little more then the other shop. which he just loves, bought silk plants and bought 3 neon tetras to be his friends.I didn't realize, but the neon tetras are fin nippers and they did stress out and all die within three weeks. and i realised, the last one got bored and started eating my bettas tail. :(

Sorry about your tetras :(

I hope you find a lot of useful info here. It's best to research before putting anything together, as you probably learned already.

If you ever have questions, this is the place to go!
Yes, I've already learnt so much from here. & I would have done the research, but then I don't think my little friend would have been there! because he was definitely one of the healthier ones there.

Tetras are better in a group of 5 as they are schooling fishes, you had 3 where they felt stress and therefore 1 by 1 went up to fisheaven. The last one left is due to the fact it being stressed it started to finip your betta in a way of protecting his area of the tank. Therefore its either to introduce 4 more tettras or move it to another smaller tank and let your betta be in peace. :D

i felt the same way when i found mine. i was shoppping with my step mom for the kids goldfish and i saw these betta fish at petco, they were gorgeous but they all looked really sad and dead... we went to petsmart to get cheaper decorations and they also had betta fish who were more lively. i was just looking at them while my step mom and brothers looked at decorations and impulsively bought one. there was no question which. he was the prettiest one there :) my step mom had bred them when she was younger so she told me a bit about them. i found out the rest online and am still learning but i absolutely love my little guy! hes my first fish and i really hope he lasts a long time :)

Petsmart seems to replace there fish more often - at least where I live. It was probably a new shipment. Then again, from what I know Petsmart gets their bettas from a better place than Petco or Walmart.

I was at Walmart the other day and half the bettas were missing half their fins!

I know. I actually stopped a woman who was getting her kid a betta for her birthday one day. She grabbed a vase and I told her it'd die or just lay around depressed if she didn't at least get the one gallon tank they had right next to it.

She seemed a bit unhappy at first but got the tank instead and thanked me for letting her know.

its amazing how little research people do. i didnt do much before i got mine but i did enough i think. i was telling my friends at school about my betta and mentioned the water temp was at 78 and they freaked out saying i would kill him. when ive done my research and found that everywhere says thats the minimum temp
