Need Help Quick!

My roommate got this betta about a month ago and he hasn't eaten since. We've tried pellets, flakes, and blood worms and he just wont eat. As of late last week he has begun suffering severe fin rot. So today he decided to put him down with baking soda. I've been sneaking looks at him and he's still chugging along. It's my roommate's betta so it's not my call, but I would really like to save this guy. What could be the problem and is it worth taking him out of his bwol with baking soda or should I let the poor guy pass on. The sooner the responses roll in the quicker it will be for me to just take him as my own!

Not sure about the eating part, as for the fin rot daily water changes with warm clean water. Aquarium salt with also help, 1 tsp per gallon. Also I highly doubt the baking soda will euthanize him, probably just irritate him, I know you're suppose to use clove oil

Yeah he's not really in proper conditions but I know I could offer him much more I just don't know if it's worth "stealing" him. (Even though he's just leaving it for dead at this point)
With the proper care you can bring bettas back from the dead. I'd say take him out of the baking soda, get him in clean water. What's the size of the tank he's in? Do 100% water changes, use stress coat and AQ salt. Also talk to one of the mods on here, they'll know more than I do. If you're roommate's just leaving him for dead, it's worth it to at least try and help him

I'll talk to my roommate tomorrow since he's off to bed now. He's currently just in a bowl and if I took him he would just be in a bigger bowl. I do plan on getting another tank next week with dividers so he would be in a much better situation. Thanks for all your help!
I did take him and I put him with some medicine. Hopefully he makes it!
That's good, all you can do is try
