My father came to visit me a couple of weeks ago. Now he has fed my fish before without any issues so I didn't think anything of it. I was planning to go out with friends so I thought it would be fine to have him feed them. I showed him on my computer where the exact detailed instructions were to how to feed my fish since some of my fish eat different pellets (they are on an all frozen food diet but when a stranger feeds them, they get either Omega One Marine Micro Pellets or New Life Spectrum).

Bottom line

My dad fed my girl (who bloats extremely easily) 10 pinches of the Marine Micro Pellets and fed my two boys 20 NLS pellets each!

My girl is now "fat" not bloated (thank god) so she should be fine, she is being fasted and I just add Epsom Salt in her tank tonight. Perry on the other hand as been laying at the bottom of the tank for two weeks with extreme SBD. I came home yesterday to him showing signs of dropsy so he is now on Kanaplex.

The only reason why Sebbie was saved is he is still a new fish and is shy when eating so I don't think he ate all the pellets.

I'm literally about to kill my father. Perry is my gorgeous EE in my profile photo.

I'm really upset. my dad did apologize but he's fed my fish a bunch of times before. He overfed them because he knew I was going out of town for 3 days the next day and thought they would be hungry... i know he meant well.

Right now the pineconing is very slight so maybe there is still a chance. But if it gets to a point that the pineconing is severe and he is clearly not going to recover i am probably going to euthanize him. He has already suffered two weeks with extreme SBD.

Sorry about your fish :( That really sucks.

I'm sad to say that this has been my experience with other people feeding my fish too - even trusted, highly intelligent, much loved family members seem unable to grasp simple instructions (like open up one compartment this pill case, and dump the contents into the aquarium, and do nothing else) when it comes to fish feeding.

If it's less than a week, I leave them be. More than a week I prepare pill boxes, and leave them with my dad, who raised angelfish for many years. This works out. Luckily I'm very, very rarely gone for more than a week!

If I'm gone for a week then I just don't feed my fish. They are fine and I've never had any issues with that.

The only reason why I let my dad feed my fish that night is because he trys/wants to help. And well how do I put this... I'm 21 so when i go out I do things that other 21+ years do (if you know that I mean) and I'm usually too tired to feed my fish when I come home so I just would skip a feeding that night.

Oh my! I'm so sorry that happened to you. I do the same thing. I might go away for a night that turns into a couple of days. This was part of the reason I chose fish, because unlike a dog or cat, they don't require your daily attention. I have the freedom to go away for the weekend or even a week, and don't have to worry about coming home to my house being destroyed. (My last dog had severe separation anxiety and would eat his way out of the crate and DESTROY my house) Anyway, I hope your guy pulls through.

yeah that is another reason why I have fish as well. I live in NYC, my apartment is in manhattan but a lot of the time i'm in brooklyn since all of my friends live out there. To get home usually an hour from where ever I am if I take the subway so a lot of nights I just crash on my best friend's couch. If i had a cat or something, I could not do that.

Exactly. Been there and tried to have a dog, and I wouldn't have minded taking him everywhere with me, but he didn't last 5 minutes in a car without getting sick. I loved him, but after numorous types of crates, remote controls, cds, furniture, mp3 player, cords, flooring, and walls... he had to find a new home. I miss him because he had the best personality and was absolutely stunning, but I couldn't keep replacing my entire apartment every time I went to the freaking grocery store. Marley had nothing on my snowman.
