New Boy Hughie - SBD?

Brought home a new guy tonight, I couldn't leave him behind. I was at the LPS looking through the Bettas (all black/navy blue) and there was this poor boy on his side at the top of the tank. He kept coming to me and then floating to the top, he was struggling to get to the middle of the cup and he couldn't :( But he tried his hardest to come to me every time I touched the tank.

Anyways, I called someone over and then I called the manager and asked for a discount on him. They gave him to me for $2, no warranty. I'll take that. He's home with me now. Just wondering, IS this SBD and what's the best way to treat it? Epsom salt and fasting? Poor guy, new home and he's being refused food lol

This pet store feeds freeze dried bloodworms ONLY. The manager said this is the first time anyone has EVER asked for a discount on a sick fish. I told him this is the first time someone like me has found a sick fish they want to save.

Right now he's in a 0.8g QT tank as Ben has my 1g and the smallest tank at the store was a 2.65 Marina Goldfish for $50. I couldn't justify that when I have a 5gal NPT set up for the bettas lol

I can't take photos of him right now, he's stressed striped to the max. He is a black/blue VT, the usual at my store. Gosh knows how old he is.

If you keep the water level lower, divided tanks are generally okay. I've only had a few incidents where my girl jumped over into the male's side but she just wanted to eat his bloodworms. And the one time one of my males jumped into another male's side, nothing happened. I think it's because the male who jumped is about as nonaggressove as a betta can get. He doesn't even know how to flare. So far no problems with any contagious illnesses either, but I always QT my bettas before putting them in divided tanks or sororities.

My girls swim up high and attack the siphon hose, it's funny. They nibble on my arms too and then they'll stare at all the gunk going up the hose and try to eat it.

*yawn* Well I'm going to do one last check on Scooter and then wander off to bed. I hope Hughie gets better overnight. :)

I actually have divider blockers for jumpers :) It's not so much the jumping, it's just that Carnage and Venom shared a tank and things didn't go wonky until they did.

I hope your Scooter does ok overnight! I expect to see some good news tomorrow morning :) Thanks for saving him! Night Sakura!

Yay!! Hughie's swimming! I noticed tonight when I went to do tank changes, he popped up from the back of the tank and swam up to me. I swear he did a twirl.

I gave him more water, we'll wean off the salts tomorrow and add water as he gets strong. I am unsure how long he's been floating, floating belly up and not actually swimming. I noticed two big poo's in his tank too. I've been giving him 1tsp/gal epsom salts and live brine shrimp since he got here.

But Yay!

You have no idea how this makes me feel! After loosing my first two, and not being able to help them (so unsure of my skillz, didn't know what I was doing) it's nice to take home a sick fish and make him better. He's still not coloring up, but he's also not in a heated tank. But I am hoping this is the end of the SBD.

After all the time that felt like I failed at everything, it's nice to do something good. Guess I have two boys again! Thanks for being here for me Sakura.

I'm glad I could be here to see Hughie get well. :) I do remember how utterly devastated you were when you lost your last guy so I'm very, very happy that Hughie is doing so well for you. :) I'm also so very glad you didn't quit fish altogether. And so is Hughie because if it wasn't for you, who knows what would have happened to the poor guy? Congratulations, Pitluvs, I knew you could do it. :-D

Oh I was devastated, I still can't look at their photos :( Venom was my baby, I used to sit and talk to him and it was like he listened. Carnage was my heart betta, I wanted to breed him and share his beauty with the world. I gave up my two breeder Bettas (one of them could have been sold 20 times) because I was so damaged by all this. But, I woke up one morning and said "I'm going to the pet store, buying everything new and getting me a healthy betta!" This time, I figured I could take on a simpler case of SBD.

So far I have battled new tank syndrome, Ich, Columinaris, SBD and whatever it was Venom had. I'm getting there!
