Hey guys I am new here, and had a quick question. If I have a thermometer for my 3 gallon fish tank that I keep my beta in, can I pour hot or luke warm water in every now and then to try my best to keep the temperature around 78 until my next paycheck when I can buy a heater? Or would that not be a good idea? Also I will be going away for a week, and have a friend that should be coming by every other day to feed him. Any other advice to ensure he lives?! Thanks!!

What exactly is the temperature of the water? Betta Fish are okay with 74F-80F.
If the new water is like only 1 degree hotter then it's okay. Only if the new water is only like 1-2 degrees hotter, than that's okay. If it's like 10 degrees hotter, he would have to get used to it very fast. Might go into shock. Just gradually heat up the water one by one to ensure no shock. Here's what I would do:
1. Prepare 2 degree hotter water for him.
2. Take out the same amount of water that you have prepared for him.
3. Pour the prepared water in his tank. Wait After 8-10 minutes, then repeat until the desired temperature.
Once it is Night time, the water can instantly drop 2-5 degrees. This is why you should have bought a heater in the 1st place. So it can stay in that temperature 24/7. Don't worry. Beginners mostly forget about the heater.
Betta Fish need it though. They are Tropical Fish. Good Luck!!!

Actually, I would not do as Lebron has suggested (sorry Lebron). It is better that the temperature just stay consistent than you change it constantly, especially as you won't be able to do this 24/7 until you get a heater.

Instead, wrap the tank in a towel or blanket and keep it high up in an enclosed space like a cupboard. Heat will rise and keep it nice and toasty. Alternative, set your heating to a constant 80-82F. That should keep the water above 75, at least.

Before you leave on your trip, do a 100% water change, and then do another when you get back.
