Yesterday I noticed he was not using a pectoral fin and read that it might be an injury. I also read that raising the temp might work. Raised it to 79F. It did work and he now uses his pectoral fin but he has purple on it. I was wondering if it's just an injury or if he has to be treated for something? Thank you in advance.

I'm not entirely certain, but it could be bruising. I'm not too well educated on the big-ear or dumbo variety. If he injured it, this could be a sign of the injury.
If a person were to injure a muscle or joint, a warm compress would help increase capillary blood flow to help stimulate healing. Increasing the water temperature could be doing this.

Again, I'm no pro on that kind of stuff. I'm not even sure if fish bruise, but it's a starting point.

I'm concerned that may be necrotizing tissue.

He may be seriously ill, and need some rather intensive nursing care for a little while.

What fish meds do you have on hand, if anything?

I read on google that fish can bruise but I'm not sure on how reliable that is and yes it's a starting point. Thank you for your reply.

I doubt it, but I'd QT just to be safe. It's like getting an open wound on your hand and not treating it at all, letting it turn gangrenous, then just letting it rot.

Your fish will lose fin rays and might not be able to completely grow the fin back, but he'll cope. If he recovers well, he'll still have use of that fin.

Thank you :)

Regarding the salt treatments, I researched it and it said "Add 1 tsp/gal Aquarium Salt 3 times, 12 hours apart."

When treating him, do you think I should treat as fin rot and still add the salt or?

P.S. Sorry for all the questions.

That might over-salt your fish. I usually do 1 teaspoon per gallon with every fresh change of water.
Salt, like calcium, can only be removed from water by removing water. If you keep adding it without diluting or removing it completely, a one-gallon tank can become too salty.

I've used this site as a guideline:

Thank you for all your help.

I do not mean to worry you but I feel like it's similar to this?

Then again I imagine all necrotizing flesh is the same?

I may or may not have posted this replay and had it lost in cyberspace.

Necrotizing flesh generally looks the same in fish, I guess. In mammals, there are some subtle differences between different bacteria and viruses.

I read a good portion of that link you posted and that's some scary stuff. I recalled (after some Google wizardry) the paper I had read that had been published concerning betta colors, health, immunities, and carotinoids.

I am thinking we might be dealing with a bacteria infection called aeromonas that can cause hemorrhagic septicemia --a blood stream infection. I don't like the way the base of his fin looks--that's characteristic of septicemia.

If this was my fish I would treat like this:
1. Soak his food in neomycin to get some antibiotics inside him.
2. Treat his tank with triple sulfa.
3. Give him a a daily 30 minute bath in a solution of tank water and potassium permanganate (Jungle Clear Water.) Use a double dose of pp in the bath--I use well rinsed quart milk jugs with the top cut down. Don't add the pp to his tank and toss the bath out after his soak.

If he doesn't respond to this in a couple days, I would try a water change and dosing his tank with kanaplex and furan 2. Septicemia can kill if not treated, so I would take steps a little stronger than salt--just my experience speaking.

I have a question. If I already added aquarium salt, do I do a water change before adding medication?
