Oh no my baby!

170 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Kristyann4793
So a few months ago before doing any research I bought a baby betta from petco (needless to say I know better now ) so the baby has been doing fine actually better than fine he's been perfectly healthy but the past two days he's been swimming erratically not eating and his fins are together. Today I bought him a new tank thinking it would solve it. I even decided to get a ghost shrimp (stupid but I wasn't thinking) so anyways I guess I'm posting to see what's wrong and if I can put the ghost shrimp in the babies old bowl and wait until I get my 29 gallon in a few weeks. Again I know I'm new and I'm sorry but please don't attack ms for being a newbie.

1) I would do more frequent water changes. Clamped fins usually mean that he is stressed. In a 1 gallon tank, you need to be done 2 50% water changes and 1 100% water change every week.

2) What type of pellets are you feeding him? I suggest either Omega One or New Life Spectrum pellets. If money is a concern, Omega One Pellets are the same price as all of the lesser quality brands.

3) I highly suggest getting a bigger tank. Yes, bettas can do very well in 1 gallon tanks but It is a lot of work and you have to do water changes almost every day. I don't keep bettas in any tank less thank 2.5 gallons.

4) the temperature is fine. 78 is good for a betta, although i suggest getting the water up to 80 degrees.
I have my other betta in a 2.5 but he's full grown. I had this little guy in a bigger tank but he was too stressed out. Maybe I'll try moving him back to his bigger tank.
