I have a divided 15 gallon split into 3 sections, with the middle being empty to house the filter/heater and act as a "buffer zone." I noticed that there is a oily looking film on top of the water on the left side, where the filter intake is, the middle and the right side do not have it. I'm just concerned that the fish in that section won't be able to get air easily.

I'm thinking it is a protein film and there just isn't enough water disturbance on that side so I might buy a bubble disc, do you think this will work? I have a Aqueon QuietFlow20 filter and I feed them Aqueon pellets if that info would be helpful, thanks :)

A bubble disc in that section should help. I was getting that too in my middle section, so I ended up just putting a little cheap filter in there with the outflow aimed up to break the surface tension.
