My mom picked up the omega one betta buffet flakes instead of pellets today. Are they as good?

They are very messy, so they will degrade the water quality. You should be able to return them.

I only really use flakes for fish that are troublesome with food and won't/can't eat the pellets. But I usually try to wean them onto the pellets. Flakes are very messy, and hard to portion well.

You're probably better off returning them and getting the pellets. They'll be higher quality and less messy.
