If you can can you please post a picture of your fish's gill? that would help alot. Flakes are fine, but I would recommend pellets. Also you need a betta pellet/flake food. I recommend new life spectrum or omega one betta buffet.
You can also feed twice a day with your food.
Hopefully someone who knows what it is will chime in!
