As I get ready to get another male betta, I keep thinking about what color and such. But at the petstore, some are in the little cups, and some are in tanks with other fish. I used to mainly get them from the little cups, but the last one I had came from a tank and I noticed how much more interactive he was compared to the previous fish when I brought him home. It was like he was used to a big open tank to swim around in, and he didn't just sit in one spot.

So, while there's more to choose from in the little cups, would it be better to select one from a tank? I would be easier to see how active he is, and how he is with other fish.

All bettas are different and depending on conditions of the tank, or possible disease it could be hard to tell. If you are putting him in a community tank it may be a good idea to see how he interacts if he is going to be by himself then it really doesn't matter. I would just try to find one whose fins are intact, and looks healthy. Also a fish in a cup may do well in a community setting I personally would just find one you like weather he is in a tank or a cup.

I wish I could find a website or thread on here maybe that had pictures of sick bettas. A lot of people mention on here to check for missing scales and such, but to an inexperienced betta owner, I don't exactly know what I'm looking at lol!

I feel the same way! :| What I do is look for an active Betta, that is brightly colored, and isn't missing any fins

It's always kinda a crap shoot buying fish from a store (or, breeder too, if you don't get to know them)...
Honestly, sometimes they totally change personality once at home with you! I had a dalmation VT
that was super mellow in the store, then turned into the toughest show off in the bunch....and
a flare crazy hyper dragon, well he went completely shy in his new home...

Even health wise...it's tough to tell, some can have a hidden disease despite being active & bright.
Follow your instinct on it...and make sure the store gives your some kind of money back deal, don't let
them scam you..my Petco is lucky to have a very fish smart guy working for em I chat up...try to find a place with people who actually seem to like fish..if you can manage to find a breeder, talk to them first.
