Plz help with fins and scales!

504 Views 16 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  mrsgrimm
Beau scratched himself on his side a few days ago. I've been trying to keeping an eye on it but some how missed his fins shrinking. Almost kinda melty/stringy except they aren't stuck together. I don't know if any one else can see what i'm talking about. Anyway my question is what should i use to fix it. I have aquarium salt (which i've never used), Rid-Ich by Kordon and then there is this bottle of Bettafix (i haven't used this either). Here's one picture. I can probably get another if need be. Sorry bout the flash.
Please help me fix my baby boy.

Mince garlic then microwave, for about a minute. Dip his regular food in that mixture, it will make him stronger against infections( such as that scratch).
On his next water change, prepare a bucket of water the day before, add 1tbs/g of salt and mix with the stress coat water conditioner( I highly recommend this). Then the next day, during the water change, add a cup if decaf green tea to the tank, this will comfort them, and help heal that tail
Best of luck
Feed that garlic food to him until he gets better

Thank you! I'm going to give that a try. As for the decaf green tea.. How do i prepare that for him? The same as if i was brewing it for myself? Do i use his treated water or bottled water? I saw a video earlier that someone just put the tea bag directly in the tank.?

Right now he's in a .5 gallon. His 3 gallon is being shipped and should be here soon.
brew it up in a cup of boiling water, let it cool to room temp and then pour it into the tank, nice and easy. it will of course stain the water, but bettas love dark water so dont worry.
Ok, I'll give it try. :)
Don't forget the garlic-food, trust me it helps.
The water may turn green, but betas are more comfortable in darker water.
Try blocking off the clear view edges, he might be stressed. The green tea acts like a healer and a de-stressed, but your water conditioner should be stress coat,
I hope I helped,

Going to give him his salt bath (1tsp salt per gallon) later this morning while doing water changes.

Added a cup of green tea (decaf) to his .5 container last night. Seemed he got feisty for a little bit but then slept like a baby. He was in the same spot for four hours anyway lol

He got his pellets rolled around and soaked in crushed garlic this morning cause last night i forgot. I remembered right after he gobbled it all down. After he ate the first pellet i swear he made a funny face.

But that could have been sleep deprivation also. lol was up till 2am with him, just watching him watch me. I worry about him more then the others. <3 my Beau
He will react like that in the first day, but trust me he will become way more active, have newer fins, and scar will get smaller.
Is he moving more, at least a little more?
Because if so, this regimen will work I promise.
Best of luck

Omg! He is almost a new boy! He's swimming a lot more and showed me his fins this morning. Ever since i got him he's been kinda lazy... So i thought. I normally do close to a 90% water change but i spent my water change time at the hospital. My daughter broke her arm. But i did give him a 50% about 12:00 last might right before i collapsed lol.
Going to do my normal 90% about lunch time i think. The garlic, salt, tea combo is genius btw. :-D
Oh and he's starting to get white tips!
White tips are good. :) New growth is starting. Sounds like you're doing the right thing for him.
Update on Beau. He's still doing great! He swims more, his scales are prettier, has a little new fin growth, he's MORE social, is swimming stronger, looks like a gained a little weight and for the first time built 2 bubble nest! He has NEVER made a bubble nest before! I'm so incredibly happy he is doing so well.

He is clearly a lot happier and comfortable

I don't know what was wrong with him before. I thought it was just a fin rot/melt issue but I'm starting to think differently. Possibly a parasite.? doesn't matter, he is a totally new boy!

Before treament.. sorry about the flash.

picture of a couple days into treatment..

Beau today.. Sorry about the flashes.

Don't know if anyone else can see the difference through the flash.

My look at that tail! He is going to be the handsomest fish at the ball!
It touches me how better he is. I remember the cut on his stomach, now its gone!
Have a happy rest of life with Beau, he is and has always been a beauty.
I hope my advice helps your other fish, when times like this will happen, never forget the tea, salt and garlic method.
Beau was doing awesome.. I got him in his 3 gallon tank and he turned into a tail biter. He is currently in the salt, tea, stress coat bath. Garlic pellets. I've rearranged his tank and removed the light and Nerites. He also chewed up all of his anacharis. He's proving to be a frustrating little fart. I'm not giving up on him though. :)
