He's a male. Sometimes males have egg spots.

yup! male. The fins say male for sure :) and I have long finned females, short finned females, long finned males and short finned males  There are some young males who have the egg spot... Hence why you could mistaken HIM for a HER since he was still growing!

I have long finned, short finned, of both male and female. the body type on your "female" says male, since most females should have the plumpness, or at least the curved belly look to them if they are not eggy. Males have beards, while females may only have the clear part, or just the face plate. Plus, I've seen some long finned gals who were LOOOONG finned  but what you have there is for suer a male, since the longest finned female I've seen didn't have them that long.

Long finned females will never get to be the size of a male's fins. It doesn't happen.
