Hi all. I just got home and came to feed the boys and noticed Cosmo have a pretty nice gash on his head. I really don't know what he could've hit himself on to give that. I was planning on putting him in his new tank this evening but if I need to keep him in his temp tank to help treat the gash I definitely will.

Housing:
How many gallons is your tank? Currently 3
Does it have a filter? No
Does it have a heater? Yes
What temperature is your tank? 84 because I forgot to unplug the heater before work, it usually sits around 78 80
Does your tank have an air stone or other type of aeration? Air line
Does your Betta have tank mates? Not currently What kind?

Food:
What food brand do you use? Omega one
Do you feed flakes or pellets? Pellets and frozen brine shrimp
Freeze-dried? No
How often do you feed your Betta? Twice a day
How much? 3 pellets, some shrimp

Maintenance:
Before your Betta became ill how often did you perform a water change? Weekly
What percentage of water did you change? 100%
What is the source of your water? Tap
Do you vacuum the substrate or just dip out water? Dip
What additives do you use other than conditioner? What brand of conditioner? Tetra Betta safe seachem prime

Water Parameters:
What are your water parameters? Please give exact numbers. If tested by pet store please get exact numbers. "Fine" or "Safe" won't help us help you. Important: Test your water before the regular water change; not after one.

Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 0
pH: 7.0
Hardness (GH): 60
Alkalinity (KH): 40

Symptoms and Treatment:
When did you first notice the symptoms? Tonight
How has your Betta’s appearance changed? The gash
How has your Betta’s behavior changed? He seems to be hiding a bit more
Is your Betta still eating? Yes
Have you started treating your Betta? If so, how? No
Does your Betta have any history of being ill? No
How long have you owned your Betta? A few weeks
Was he or she ill or suffering some sort of damage when purchased? No

Oh no! Poor baby.

Is it bleeding?
It looks more like he just tore some scales off, do correct me if I'm wrong!

In the meantime, clean water, and an IAL. If it is an open wound I believe aquarium salt can be used for that.

And check your tank for sharp points? You can sand any down that you find!

Hope he gets better soon!

No it doesn't appear to be bleeding. He moves past so quickly I can't really confirm if it looks like scales off or not unfortunately.

I currently just have some salt, will that work good on its own?
Also I'm assuming I should wait on the new tank move?

As far as sharp points, his temp tank definitely has nothing sharp that's why I'm baffled honestly. Unless he got himself in a jam by the heater?

It's good he's not bleeding. Hopefully he just scratched off some scales.

Aquarium salt will work fine on it's own. Do a water change every other day as well?

I would suggest doing so, moving him will undoubtedly stress him, even if it's just a little, and it's better if he heals first.

Possibly. And he could've just rubbed something the wrong way too.

I got a closer look and it definitely looks like scales, which seems like the best worst thing in this situation?

It's slightly upsetting he couldn't get in his new tank tonight, I was planning on him being in there for some family to see tomorrow, however the little guy had other plans I suppose.

Ah good thing, because I did a full water change with added salt tonight. Should I just keep that up for like a week or so? Or else until.the scales get better? I think I might've added a wee little bit too much for the tank, but it won't hurt will it?

Great news, he looks SO much better today. He's zooming everywhere. You can still see a bit of a bump, but I think it looks great

That's definitely good!

Aww, he'll be in there soon though.

You can do around 50% then just half the amount of salt you'd usually put in, putting in a full dose will over dose him.
It won't this once, I've done it before too!

That does look great!! Yay!

He'll probably be all healed up in a day or two, which then you can stop the salt.

Glad he's healing so quickly!

Awesome thanks! Maybe if he behaves and doesn't hurt himself again, he'll be able to go in his tank this weekend 🤞

Me too! I'm assuming he's healing quick because he seems pretty young, but then again I wouldn't know hah.

Do they ever behave though?
Crossing my fingers too!

Could be, but I'm not very good at telling age either. Important thing is, he's healing!

Not when you want them to aha

Yes definitely! It's pretty cool to see him changing his behavior each day though, almost like he is maturing. Perhaps thats just in my head

I doubt it, I've had some young ones that I was able to watch grow and they did the same. They're like humans in a way!
