Hi fellow betta lovers
I recently had an interesting experiece with some bettas. I bought a betta fish from my local Petsmart. As an experienced betta owner, I knew what I was doing as far as introducing the fish to his new tank, which I did very carefully. So you can imagine my surprise when I woke the next morning to find poor Yorick dead (suddenly the line "Alas, poor Yorick!" was morbidly appropriate). I took the fish back to the store and they kindly let me choose another fish. I did everything over again, but woke the next morning to find Yorick II dead. Needless to say, I was extremely upset and confused (is it normal to cry over a fish haha?)
I refused to give up, though--so I hightailed it to the Petco instead. I spoke with one of the "fish experts" about my problem and he said it had to do with the fact that Petsmart left their bettas in the "blue oxygenated water used for transport" and that they just didn't take care of the fish. Either way, i picked out a beautiful new fish which i named Galileo, who has so far done exeedingly well in his new home.
The experience interested me and i am considering using some of the details in a new story that i am writing as a project for class (i am studying English and Creative Writing). In the course of my research I found a lot of references to "methylene blue". Could it actually cause a problem? Was Petco guy right?
If anyone more knowledgeable on the subject could help me out, I'd really, really appreciate it.
