So I upgraded Paarth to a 10 gallon (plan to house 2 ADF's with him once they're got and QTed) and is loving it right now - exploring all over the place and everything.

I noticed that the current of my Tetra Whisper Internal Power filter (for 10-30 gallons) was a little strong for him and he kept hanging around it. So, using the sponge I bought to shield my filter cartridge to prolong its life, I cut a piece and tied it with a rubber band around the filter.

My only concern is about the rubber band. Do these things give off any sort of chemicals? It sits in the water, so I was worried. Is there a better method of attaching?

I don't think rubber in itself is harmful. Don't they make rubber fish decor?
If you got the elastic from like vegetables or something there is probably ink on it which would be more worrying.

If you'd rather use something else, you could use white cotton thread or some fishing line to tie the baffle in place. People use those to tie down live plants in tanks all the time.
