You mentioned that he has no tank mates, but he’s in a divided tank. Is the other side currently uninhabited?

I was starting to lean towards fin nipping, but it appears that he has the same redness on one of his pectoral fins?

Since it would be almost physically impossible to reach his pectoral fin for nipping, if he does have the same problem on his pectoral fin, something else is going on. if it started as nipping, it’s progressed beyond that now.

Personally, my fin damage first line of treatment is tannins via Indian almond leaves or plain, unflavored, rooibos tea, and SeaChem StressGuard.

The tannins have antibacterial and anti fungal properties and the StressGuard acts almost like a bandage to coat the damaged areas.
