Hi all,

ive posted here before about my betta not feeling well and always floating on his side, for 3 months he was like that, but since yesterday ive noticed some poop hanging from his stomach and today he has not floated but i think his scales have raised and it looks like dropsy :(, right now he has his mouth close to the water and today i tried to give him some daphnia but he didnt go for it (which is a first) yesterday he ate a pellet thoughh, do you think he is constipated now and trying to get the poo out or is this it for him, the dropsy is starting? he doesnt look bloated nowhere near the pictures ive seen from people who have had dropsy in there bettas, his water is upped now from 26c (78f) to 28c (82f) i raised the temp because the thermo was showing the the temp droped to 75f , its cold here in australia and my house is really cold at night and most of the day. sorry for the long post. hope someone can tell me what to do, btw tank is 3.5 gall and filtered.

Just for future reference, in a 3.5 gallon tank i had the temp set at 82F, when i went a while back at the aquarium store he told me i had the temp way to high and told me to drop it down to 68F, it confused me, was he right? maybe now i made my boy suffer because his water was too warm :(

I think you will see in this forum that those temps up to 80's are ok. I have a 2.5 gal tanks for my betta and they stay at 82-84 on the high end, and have been so without problems. 68 yeah that is way too cold. Take what the employee says with a grain of salt and do your own research. If though have a private fish store owner in your area, better to deal with them, big box stores don't often have good advice.

It will be ok, it takes time to get over any loss of what we hold dear.

82 degrees is only a degree or two above the normal range, I keep both of my tanks at 80-81, and I know plenty of other forum members do as well. So I have a hard time believing that was the cause of his downturn.

The pet store employee that told you to put it at 68 is insane! That's WAY too cold for a betta, and would have caused even worse problems, I'll bet. Good on you for not listening.

I'm very sorry for your loss :( sometimes it's just their time, despite our efforts.

Thanks nicecrocs, i also thought that it would be too cold, it happened so quick though he was a small betta maybe 6-7 months all up, i still cant come to mind what would of been the issue he had a poop sticking out of him last night so i thought finally the sbd might be getting better, then this morning he was at the bottom not breathing or moving, its so sad, would it be too soon to go look for another betta or would it help me clear my mind about this little boy, such a hard day for me today, that little face was trying to tell me to help him.

Really, the only person who can make that decision is you. We all have to grieve in our own way. Some people find they need to take a step back in order to heal, while others find closure through the act of giving another animal a loving home as quick as possible, and everywhere in between. Whichever you decide is the right path for you, is the right decision.
