Hello everyone. I welp. I did it..... A girl who lives on my floor at college also has a pet betta. She is a beautiful blue plakat girl and is rather big actually. My friend who lives with her said how this girl never cleans her bowl which is maybe a liter big, and how she never cleans it. So she said told me since the girl was not here for the weekend. So I went in on a mission to clean this poor little betta's home. However, nothing prepared me for this horrible conditions this little girl was in.
I walk in to find her in a liter rectangle barely called a tank, and It was FILLED with mold and slime and the water was not water anymore, just a brownish sludge. I could barely see through the, what was supposed to be, clear home. So I cried a little and rushed at her with both hands ready to save her. When I opened the tank, it smelled like rotten fish remains and farts. I gently scooped the little angel up with my hand as she wriggled through the slime, into a clean dechlorinated cup. immediately she perked up swimming all happy. So I began to pour out the sludge that was her water and almost threw up at the smell and texture.
After scrubbing the little plastic thing like 5 times! it was finally clean and free of slime and mildew. Then i Scrubbed the rocks and learned from my friend that she hasn't changed this LITER OF WATER FOR OVER THREE MONTHS! I was about to loose it I scrubbed the rocks, dumped out 3 months worth of old poop and uneaten food, and sanitized it with boiling water.
When I was done i poured in fresh water and mixed it with stress coat to help at least a little with her fin rot. After that she seemed very happy and began to swim around cuddle my finger as I i put her back in. I didnt want to leave her. I wanted to call her my own. What do I do guys? I do not have enough money to take on another betta but in the summer I will be getting a 5 gallon tank. Could I steal her till then and put her in with Daryl and lots of plants so they do not mate or fight? HELP!:cry::cry:
Should i Steal her away and give her a loving home? Please help. I really might steal this fish.

Theft is never an answer. Even in this case. If it were me, I would wait until she returned and ask her if she would relinquish ownership to you. A rescue here is very much needed. You have cleaned the cube and given the little girl a second chance at life. However the fin rot needs to be cared for right away. People never understand that when they take on the responsibility of caring for an animal or fish they take on the responsibility to give them a quality of life. To leave this little girl in such a condition is beyond cruel. I hope you succeed in getting this life and being able to turn it around.

Even in this case? I don't mean to be rude or argue but that poor little girl will surely die if I do not take her. Idk in ethics, what is worse? Letting her betta Die? or stealing? Again, I do not mean to be rude. I am just concerned

I'd take her into your care while her owner is gone and when she gets back confront her and see if she'll give her Betta up to you. Tell her she could even come and see her all she wants. This made me very upset. It kills me that her owner didn't even take care to clean the water.

Always difficult when you see one that will inevitably die... sigh. You can't steal though, that will be illegal, even if their owner is irresponsible. In cases of animal cruelty, there are usually organisations you can call. Fish however, don't get the luxury :( ppl are never as concerned, but you could try.

If I were you, I would print out a sheet of betta care information of some sort. Then leave it next to the tank with a nice note. Especially if you do not have space to takeover her care. If you confront her too aggressively, chances are she will become defensive.

By the way, even if its a 5 gallon with lots of plants, dont put her together with a male betta. They will eventually kill. You could maybe try with a divider.

Wow, that's disgusting! How lazy can a person be that they can't even clean a fish bowl! I get mad at people for not putting heaters in a betta tank when it's needed let alone not cleaning a tank. I would definitely approach this scumbag and offer to take her and even pay her! I would even offer to clean the tank for free one a week if she won't give her up.
I would steal her but you would get caught for sure and then you wouldn't have any access to help that poor girl.
Keep it civil and make it seem like it's in the scumbags advantage for you to care for the fish.
