I've decided on trying my hand at breeding. I'd like to know what has NOT worked too well for you guys. Tail crosses to avoid, chemicals to stay clear of, temperatures, etc. What's made your hatches go sour?

Anything can go wrong - having a natural egg eater, having weak/bad genetics and fry suddenly die. Don't think about it too much. Just try to prepare yourself with tons of knowledge and hope for the best.

I would avoid CT x to any other tail type - unless you want to create something new like CTDTPK ... for example.

Keep your temp. as stable as possible. Severe fluctuations can kill both fry and adult. Try keeping it around 82F. I would stay clear of any chemicals. I don't even use anti fungus b/c the male should take care of that.

Perhaps the key is keeping your water in good condition - keep up with water changes without disturbing fry too much (refill with the drip system). I don't do wc or disturb them when the male is still in with the fry. Some males may eat his fry if he feels disturbed.

I suggest you read the stickies to understand the basics.
