Actually sounds like he's just got poop that you're seeing. It's often the same color as the food you are feeding so it may look like food but it really isn't lol. They can't carry anything with their ventral fins as they have no muscles in their fins.
Silly Baby Boy
One of my two baby bettas some hilarious stuff. The one that gets me is when i creep up on his tank after his evening feeding i will see him swimming around carrying a piece a food with his pelvic fins since they right up against his body when he swimming. I've tried several times to get a picture but once he notices me he stops swimming and moves to whichever side of tank i'm at. One of these days ill get a picture and share it with you all but thought y'all might get a laugh at this funny little guy. Cosmo is one strange baby.
