Last night, I had done a partial water change on Mr. Fish's tank as I'd noticed his fins were still not in the best shape from when I had brought him home and what had appeared to be a small tear when I got him was looking worse. I had been doing every other day, 20%, testing his water parameters, and even ordered some IAL for his tank and a little betta cave.

Sadly, last night I forgot to put the plastic tupperware lid back over the hole in the lid on the fluval spec V. There's a giant hole for "feeding" I guess that's built in, and to deal with this I'd been putting a tupperware lid over it so that the majority of the hole was covered.

I woke up this morning and noticed I didn't see him swimming, as he usually does when I turn on my bedroom lights. I went to go turn his tank light on and noticed I didn't see him, and unfortunately, Mr. Fish had jumped last night.

I am so sorry Mr. Fish, I wish I had put that stupid tupperware lid back over the hole in your tank, and you'd still be here. Your fin was starting to improve and you had some goodies on the way in the mail. I'm sorry you didn't get to be with me longer, and I'm sorry I let you down. I hope you're okay now and swimming in peace under the rainbow bridge, enjoying warm water with lots of leafy plants and plenty of yummy treats to snack on. I promise to do better, as I wish I could have done for you, too.

Here's a picture of my lil friend showing off a bubble nest he made. I'll miss you, Mr. Fish!

I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm sure you were giving him the best of care. There is no reason that any of us can point to as to why they jump. I know you did all you could to prevent it. And yes we all make mistakes but you had no idea he would jump. so don't blame your self. It's hard but we move on. There are other little guys out there that could really use your help and love.

Thank you. Yeah, it was a crazy thing and I guess it could have happened to anyone. I hadn't even had him for very long, so he's still covered under his warranty from the store. At least now I know to be extra careful with the lid and can give another fish a chance to get out of its store cup and into a new home that's heated and has silk plants and hopefully will be getting live plants again and where they will be loved!
