My sister just got a beta, after keeping her last one in a carrying case for 2+ years of its life and now refuses to even get it a light and says they don’t need it and it’s just a fish. She’s also going to get more fish for it to live with This is its set up

It would be neat if she could get some live floating plants. They are not hard to keep at all, and will provide oxygen to the tank and help with water quality. Maybe you could suggest something like that???

And depending on tank mates, that could be very good, or very, very bad.....

I don’t think tank mates would be good in this case. I strongly recommend that she adds more plants and decor to the tank, as it will give the betta a place to hide and reduce stress.

Does she have a heater? In case she doesn't, unless room temp is 78 +degrees Fahrenheit, she's going to need one. A light is not needed, it's just for us to watch the fish ( and for the plants, but she doesn't have any.) I'd highly recommend floating plants, as @Rose of sharon said. They help with water quality, and are super easy to keep alive. My floaters grow just fine with no fertilizers or light. As for the tank mates.... In a tank that size (looks less than 10 gallons), to keep any fish she's going to need a ton of hides and plants, and even that way, she might still fail. So, all I would recommend is a nerite or two.
