Bettas usually sleep sort periods of time throughout the day.Well, at least mine does. They are NOT nocturnal so they sleep at night just like us. If they do sleep then they should probably be near the top so they could take breaks to go to the surface and get some air. They seem to look like that they are frozen. And they seem to be leaning towards the plastic or glass.

Mine seem to be awake mostly during the day, with occasional "naps" where they don't move around. They sleep like the dead when it is dark, though. The male wedges himself in the plants, and the female lies on the bottom of the tank. They are both unresponsive, and it takes them a while to wake up.

I would say, on average, that my male sleeps about four hours at night and multiple "naps" during the day. (He likes to make his bubble nests in the early morning light so wakes up early.) My female sleeps six or more hours at night, but doesn't nap much during the day.
