if you ever need to treat your fish for anything read this!
when filling up my tank i realized it wasnt actually 5.5 gallons as i didnt have to make 11 trips with my 2 QT pitcher to fill it up. after looking at that site i realized my tank actually only holds about 4.7 gallons. thats the width and length of the inside and the height from the top of the water down to were the gravel starts. which includes my heater, a mug, 2 plants, and a betta hammock, so it atually probably slightly less than that. One thing id never thought of however was medicine. I recently treated my fish for fin rot with melafix (i know its bad) that required 5mL per 10 gallons. the syringe i used didnt really have clear numbers since its so old so i just kind of guessed where halfway between two and three was and added a little more for .5 but really i shouldve used less than that. its not much of a difference in my tank, but what about bigger tanks? like the example there of 55 gallon?

very true. my 10 gallon treatment tank, is just water. so it's about 9-10 gallons. but, in my 29, it's more like 25 with lower water, ornaments and gravel in it ;-)
