Reading some of the scientific names in botany got me wondering a useless question: what exactly is Splendens? It is used to name domestic bettas and tacked on to plant species as well, and maybe more I don't know of. Is it a name assigned to the ornamental: scientific talk for pretty? Does it refer to a species that was tampered with by human hands to be more ornamental or am I way off entirely and it doesn't have anything to do with pretty?

I normally wouldn't bother the forum with such a dumb post, but I couldn't find the answer on Google and I know it will be one of those things I think about late at night when I can't sleep and have an existential crisis.

Can any patient people of knowledge speak slowly and enlighten me?

Seruiously Fish has it as: splendens: from the Latin splendens, meaning ‘shining, glittering’.

I imagine it was likely for the original wild form's iridescent scales or bright coloured eyes.
