So, I've looked around and I can't seem to find this bit of info. How do I know how powerful of an air pump I would need? I have a 10gallon tank (that came with a HOB filter that has taken far too many lives for me to even consider it's use.) Any other tips for dealing with sponge filters (DIY or otherwise) would be greatly appreciated.

I would get an air pump rated for a ten gallon tank and a sponge filter rated the same as well. Is it just one betta? If it is more (divided/sorority) I would consider getting them rated for a 20 gallon.

Do you have the sponge filter already? I found them super cheap online if you'd like the link I can post it for you!

I do not yet. just an airstone, tubing, and a pump that came with a 3 gallon. the tank will be home to 4 cories and a betta. only 2 cories in it at the moment. The link would be nice

I would sand down the edge of the top tube and possible affix an extra ring of sponge over it as I have heard of bettas getting sliced on them, but this is the best sponge filter. I've used other cheaper knockoffs and they don't flow much air at all and get clogged too easily.

Have been through a number of air pumps myself trying for quiet and the best I've found are the Tetra Whispers. The 10 should do good for you: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=12738

I believe I've seen the tetra whispers even at my wal-mart, so I'm glad to hear they work well. As for the filter I'll try to find those or something similar...I plan to just get my stuff at a local petsmart...along with a new betta.
