My tank is currently holding steady at 84.7f (we don't have AC). My fish is romping and dancing about like his usual self, but from what I've read, that's not a good temp for them.

I know the Aqueon light is giving off heat. I went to the pet store today to buy a new LED light set up, but they all promised to be brighter than fluorescent bulbs which he doesn't need- in fact, I'd like to keep it a bit dimmer than it is now. Any suggestions for a new hood/light setup?

Also, any suggestions that would also provide more permanent solutions to the gaps around the heater and filter would be appreciated.

You could get some floating plants like Dwarf Water Lettuce to cut brightness. I use Finnex Stingrays on all of my tanks.

I do love the stingray on my 10 gallon. Great light and not too hard on the pockets.

Ok. I love the water lettuce idea. Maybe I can diy something with craft mesh to hang down till I get a chance to order some.

Do you use that light with a glass lid, or can it go under a hood?

It can be mounted under a hood but mine are over glass canopies.
