Welcome to the forum!

Unfortunately, neon tetras need more than 10 gallons to live in harmony with your betta. I would suggest getting snails as @Thebettabubble mentioned. Mystery snails would be the best option for a new tank mate.

The only thing I would really watch out with apple snails is the amount of waste they produce, so for a 2.5 I would only put one, maybe a few more with more consistent keep up and a good filtration system

2.5 gallons is way to small for any fish. Upgrade to at least a 10 or 20 gallon before considering tankmates.
I don't really think that it is necessary, snails can do well with a betta in a 2.5 gallon. While it's not an ideal setup, and it's harder to care for, it can be done

I’m not talking about maintenance and stuff, I’m talking about that bettas won’t be happy in a 2.5 gallon tank. Unfortunately bettas are often given small, unsuitable tanks all the time due to misinformation about bettas. It was probably just a typo and the OP meant to say 25 gallon. Think through the betta’s POV, not through the POV of a person owning a betta.

This is not a thread to discuss appropriate tank requirements for betta fish, there is a different thread for this. This was a discussion about possible tank mates for a betta in a 2.5 gallon. And the only tankmate that can work with a betta in this setup are snails, one or two nerites or one apple snail

On this forum we do not permit "tank shaming." Size of tank is a personal preference.
I wasn’t shaming them, I was just stating that 2.5 gallons is too small. The tank size should preferably be 20 gallons or more.

The only suitable tankmates for such a small tank are snails, but even those can be unsuitable because they can overpopulate the tank extremely quickly, and before you know it you can end up with 2,000 or more snails in your tank.

This I why @FernandoTheBetta and I have recommended nerite snails, that cannot breed in freshwater, or a single apple snail, that can't breed because its, well single.
