My macrastoma are expecting, any tips on making mouth brooders comfortable so they don't swallow the eggs? Currently the male is in a tank with 3 female. Should I remove the females, feed less, turn down or off lights?

So far I've programmed the lights 10% lower throughout the day. I noticed the male stopped eating a week ago and today his lower jaw got bigger.

Hi, congrats on your bettas spawning! With my wilds that are mouthbrooders, I was able to stick to the same routine as before they were expecting. However, I found that during feeding time, the males would come out and watching everyone else eat in what felt like a very disappointed manner (lol) so I would cut back on feedings a little bit to reduce the temptation for them. Other than that, I did the same things as I did before. Obviously, macrostoma are different from my bettas so I would see how other people have had success with them specifically and see if it differs in any way. I hope that helps & good luck!

Hi Noodle! Thanks for the tips. Luckily it looks like he has no interest in eating, he just goes to the other side of the tank when its feeding time. His mate stays close to him and the other 2 females seem to be hiding during this time. I'll still cut down feeding and limit my interaction around the tank.

I've been watching and rewatching a lot of videos and can't find anything special. This is the first time he's breed so I'll just see how it ends up, I'm not going to scoop the eggs out of his mouth.

I think it's the best you can do. But its nice to see female eating and the male and following food with is eyes lol

I have no really experience with Macrostoma. Every import I look at them, but a like expensive ones for me. I have albimarginata (malinau and sebuku breeding, and a female Tarakan), Rubra breeding and Mandor (not quite yet). They all in big tanks. I keep the interactions to the minimal possible.

Wish you best of luck.
