Too strong of a filter :(

570 Views 6 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  XxBettaLoverxX
Lately I have noticed that every time I have Captain America's filter on, (every 2 days started from this Monday) it REALLY pushes him around too much. I have no idea of what to do to make it at least a bit softer. Any ideas? Thanks! Don't worry that much too because I don't have the filter on today. I do this routine because his filter is too rough with him and I don't want him to suffer.

Turning the filter on once every two days won't help. In fact, it is actually harmful. Every time you do that, it is going to spit out dead bacteria into the water. You need to make a choice - leave it on all the time, or off all the time.

What sort of filter is it? Have you tried baffling it?
Elastic band + aquarium sponge (or just a plain sponge filter) around the water output = very safe effective baffle :)

I have made a homemade Filter baffle. I tried the plastic bottle method but it didn't work. So I used a syrofoam cup with the bottom still attached to the flow would only go out one side. And like you I would only turn his filter on for about 30 min's a day. Now I am able to leave his filter on 24/7 :)

This syrofoam cup up close (t's not too noticable in real life)

If you would want to try this method I could make a step-by-step tutorial for you. I wouldn't mind :)

Wow that seems nice! I would like to do that! Can you make another thread with the tutorial? Maybe it'll help some other members with this issue too!
@Bombalurina- Really? ... Thanks for the info I actually never knew that. I actually don't know what type of filter it is but it came with this package that I bought from petland. This is how it looks. It also includes a picture of the filter. http://www.aqueonproducts.com/products/mini-bow-desktop-aquarium-kit-1.htm#
@Everyone- I am asking this question because I will be giving Captain America to my grandmother and I don't want her to have any issues with anything since she hasn't had experience with bettas. (Oh and I will help her w/ w.c. after school.)
If the bacteria is dead then it doesn't matter, Bc I promise you there is bacteria in every fish tank and most of it is good! (Microbiology degree) but if the current is to strong I'd go with the homemade filter that bettalover made, or leave it off and do full water changes every week...
Hello everyone I have made a new thread with a step-by-step tutorial about the homemade filter. Here you go: Step-by-Step Styrofoam Cup Filter Baffle
