So attached is a link to the video for the new tank that I got at petco for $40. I basically explain most of it in the video and the description, but I'll answer any other questions here.

Stocking ideas are appreciated! Thanks everyone! :-D

The light is a standard T-8 fluorescent light bulb, one of Aqueon's Full Spectrum bulbs. It should have like 6500 kelvins but I'm blanking on the wattage. If you want to grow plants, you'll probably have to stick with low watt ones like anubias, java fern and crypts.

Darn, you're making me want to run out and buy a new tank kit even though I have tanks stacked up in storage. :D Congrats on the new tank, Jen!

I was only planning on low-light ones. Epically since I don't think I'll be able to do the npt. If I could get a different bulb maybe. But it'll depend on where the tank ends up being placed. And thanks! I'm exciteddddd.

And how does the filter run? Not really /how/ but did you have to baffle it?

I grow ludwigia in less than one watt a gallon, even get a nice light red to the leaves. You could easily do plants in that tank. Just takes the right type of plants...

Sorority, betta community, regular community tank, or shrimp tank. Though the shrimp probably wouldn't go through as you probably want fish, I want a shrimp tank so bad but I have no room!

What type of water do you have? Hard or soft? And what is the pH? Some fish are still wild caught so I don't want to say any thing that won't do good, like cardinal tetras are still wild caught from the rivers.

You also can always upgrade the lights, I am planning on getting HOT5s for my sorority NPT.

Snce I'm going back and forth all the time I dont know the hardness/pH of the current water. I'm googling to figure it out now, since it'll be over in the dorm.

Just googled:
Water Quality Statistics
hardness : 65-80mg/l or Ppm
PH : 8.0-8.3 pHu

I can't help that's what the tap comes out as! And it's what the water treatment site says. Maybe I should get a pH buffer?

The hardness is posted, I have no idea what all it means.

Don't worry about it, my pH is that high too. If you don't have a water softener, the water is most likely hard too. That's okay. Bettas adapt to most any conditions and Goblin should be okay. But if you want to keep softwater fish like neon tetras (or any tetras, really), you might want to consider using a blackwater extract or peat in the filter. But guppies and platies would looove your water, they like hard water.

Watched your video :D Congrats on your new tank! I wish I had gotten a fluorescent hood now that I am messing with live plants more.

Make sure Petco will exchange the tank or any parts (heater/filter hood etc) in case something goes wrong in Aug. or whenever you do set it up. Your other option would be Aqueon, and after having had a problem with a lightbulb of theirs I am really impressed with their customer service. I am not sure offhand what either of their policies are. If their warenties don't go that far, you might want to test everything, which would mean breaking the shrink wrap! ;)

I had to return 2 10 gallon tanks. 1st one leaked. (I filled it in the shower with room temp water so it wouldn't sweat, and found out I had a steady stream of water that emptied about 1/8th of the tank in a few hours. 2ond one just had a deep score mark across the bottom that I was concerned would crack from water pressure in the tank eventually.

Good luck with it though! If you were going to do live plants i've heard eco-complete is a good substrait. I think I read a post about putting a layer of peat in the bottom under it too. That might counteract your high PH too, but check with people more expert then me!!

Best wishes!

Thanks a bunch! I think it says that the warranty on the tank from Aqueon is 90 days, the hood is a 1 year warranty, and the filter has a limited lifetime warranty. I guess I'll have to put it in my shower too!

Double post: I'm gonna have to try and get a pH test after it comes through the tap. The test results I found were from the area I live in. Need expensive test on student budget. Poo!

I never net my fish, I always cup Goblin. I feel like nets are way more stressful cuz I have to chase him around the tank with it. I literally just stick the cup in the tank and when he gets close I just scoop him up. Easy peasy.
