Stable temperatures, pristine water conditions, maintaining as low stress an environment as possible and quarantining any new fish that may be going in with others.

Velvet is a pain. I had an outbreak of it when I first set-up my barracks and luckily avoided spreading it to everyone.

I turn my heater up, do daily water changes (you need to siphon the bottom of the tank to pick up any "dead" velvet) I also boil all equipment before and aftr use to avoid cross contamination!!!
