Hi Everyone -
Its been weeks my betta beefcake has been sick, at first i thought he was just depressed because, as you can tell from his name, he used to be VERY active and would eat anything and everything in his tank. Then one day he became "picky", looking over his food, and more than likely spitting out what looked like he'd eaten. Now he doesn't really move and will sit either at the bottom of the tank, or hang out vertically in a plant by the surface. He doesn't eat, and he has severely lost his vibrancy. I brought up the level of aquarium salt i was using from 1/2 tsp per gallon to 1 tsp per gallon as recommended by another forum and he seemed to get a little more active, but no improvement in terms of eating or coloration. He quickly stopped moving about as much again and i noticed that his scales are almost striped in grey - it looks as though i can see his ribs? although i know that betta ribs are not this big so it must be something on his scales. I've added maracyn and maracyn-2 to his water in addition to his 1 tsp aquarium salt to his water (he also has a heater and is in a 2.5 gallon tank) and now seems to be rapidly breathing, flaring out his gills strangely, and sitting as lethargic as ever at the bottom of the tank. He doesnt even try to avoid being scooped out of the tank anymore for water changes. Its breaking my heart because i dont know what to do - i cant even tell what ails him! Please, if anyone has any idea, let me know.
I should add that i brought some of his water to a pet store and was told that his ammonia and ph levels are within healthy range.
Please help!

What is the temperature of the Tank? They can get lethargic when cold.
And those "Ribs" you're saying. Do they look like Stripes?
If they do, those are called "Stress Stripes". Obviously, they get it when they are Stressed.

his water temp is at 78-79 deg, and yes, the "ribs" look like stripes - could he simply be stressed then and not ill? and if so, what should i do to help him relax?
