Water lettuce

Hi,

I think the problem with water lettuce is that it can take over your tank fairly quickly. It is not allowed where I live because it has made it's way into our lakes and rivers, and covers to surface to such an extent that it causes problems for the existing wildlife, fish, and interferes with water treatment. If it overtakes the tank, it can deprive other plants from getting the light that they need.

It is used a lot in the hobby, and is excellent for sucking up excess nitrates, like any other floating plant will do. It's also good for fry, and provides shade.

As long as you don't have a pet or a child that might try to put the leaves into their mouths, then you are ok.

Hope this helps!

Ok, I found a web site, and I see what you are refering to. I guess you taught me something new! I've known people to keep water lettuce in betta tanks, with no ill effects, but that would be because their bettas just didn't nibble on the plant, I guess.

It also lists pothos as a toxic plant for bettas, too, and I have kept pothos ivy in all of my betta tanks with no problems.

If this concerns you, then please take it out. There are plenty of other floating plants, as you mentioned, if you want to use one of those.

Sorry for the incorrect advice. I was going by experience, and not thorough research...
