I've seen multiple posts about this odd "protein buildup" issue, but it is usually for people who don't have a filter (like my 1.5 gal, I see it there all the time) & tanks with very little current...

The 5 gal I am currently cycling, I have removed the airstone & pump because it was too strong for such a small tank (& for a small betta) but the filter's (my filter came w/ the Aqueon Mini Bow) current seems too gentle...

It barely disrupts the surface!

I know it will be less stressful on my betta, but even after a quick PWC, the next day the film returns!!! Just as ugly & distasteful as always.

Please help, what can I do?

xoxo

I know it's annoying, but harmless. Use paper towels to get rid of it. Works most of the time. :) BTW, I freakin' love your avatar pic. Fat squirrels! <3

Thank you for replying so quickly! & yes, I love my squirrels... I didn't think my little avatar would fit in with the rest of all these bettas, but I couldn't seem to upload my own picture let alone FIND ONE that was 200x200pixels!

I tried that, but in the end I always get extra dust in my tank, & the film comes back everyday! :x

P.S.
What is a LTB...?

I know, that's the problem. :'( But my Betta doesn't seem to be bothered. Annoyingness... it's not even a word. Hehehe... LTB means LebronTheBetta. It's the 1st letter of every word in my user name. :) Like Oldfishlady. OFL. :)

I was told it was because I feed live food???

I do not get it on my fluval chi as there is a slight movement on the surface of the water, however in my cube the filter is submersed and does not affect the surface of the water and I get a film on there, if I turn my filter so it points upwards the film disappears

staffylover, the filter that came w/ my Aqueon Mini Bow can't be turned up or any other direction w/o being broken! :-(

Thank you for the suggestion, though!

Where's OFL when you need her???

if you google "Weird film on the surface of betta's water" you will get several results from this website on the same topic.

I have the same film and I just ignore it :-D

What are some good, hardy floating plants? I'm so amazing, I had managed to kill off an entire godly clump of java moss a few months back... now all I have left are slowly multiplying baby java ferns... they used to be huge, then died off, then came back as freshly born babies........ & stayed that way. (-_-) They're still so SHORT! I ordered them from Singapore since I couldn't find them anywhere... I once saw them at Petco, though... or at least I read the label. It was a quick shopping day so IDK. gahh, help!

Air stones work great, they add oxygen, and air..to move the water, so it won't stagnate, I use one in both my tanks,..no icky film..:)

I guess I'll just have to live with this disgusting film for the rest of my betta keeping life... (-_-) My filter must be too weak, but if the surface agitation is too strong, Bubba will be a little frazzled... *SIGH* Thanks anyways, guys.

They sell a protein scoop that might work on it. Haven't looked at it though personally... one more thing to buy really - yeesh! I dunno, what kind of substrate are you using? Maybe that, or the tank itself needs a really thorough rinsing in hot water.

Plants? Me and plants do not do terribly well together either, but yeah the ferns float. Anubias and Water Sprites I've had decent luck with. Actually, saved some of the WS taking it out of the pot and just letting it do it's thing. My guy loves it like that (builds bubble nests off of it) ... gotta find some more. Wisteria too I believe.
