What can I fit in a 5 gallon tank?

My friend has a 5.5 gallon tank with a veiltail betta and he asked me what he could stock it with. All I know is you can't stock it with much. Please help.

All I would put in that is a snail... Most other passive fish are schooling, which you can't do in a 5.5G...
You could do a snail and/or divide it [only once!] for another Betta.
I've had great luck with two corydoras in a five gallon, or a plecostomus. I've also put in a Blind Cave Tetra with no issue, but ONLY with very calm fish who don't flare.
I'm fairly sure Cory's want to school, in which case 2 is too few.

Cories need at least 5 to be happy and a pleco's bioload is way too large for something that small, not to mention they can get over a foot long
Cories are schooling fish and 5 gallons isn't enough, 10g minimum is suggested.
Your best bet is likely to be snails.

Mystery snails are extremely cool -- and they move at an amazing speed. Some people have found their bettas will attack or nip the mystery snail's rather long eyestalks, although my HMPK who will flare like crazy at his reflection, completely ignores his tank mate. They come in many colors (Petco calls their golden ones "Golden Inca Snails"), and have real personalities. Mystery snails eat dead plants, some algae, and betta pellets.

Nerites are a smaller kind of snail with very small, narrow eyestalks. They come in a variety of interesting patterns and eat only algae. If you don't have algae in your tank, you can drop in algae wafers, but some nerites will not eat them and can starve. That appears to have happened to my nerite when I moved recently.

The bioload your tank can handle will depend on water changes and if you have live plants. To give you an idea, I have probably 6 plants in my tank, plus a load of floating wisteria.
