Hi, I have a 5.5 gallon tank with a power filter and a sponge filter. I put Indian almond leaves in my fishes tank each time I clean the tank (every 2-3 weeks) and take them out after a few days. His tank has 4 moss balls and has a lot of hiding spaces and fake plants, a lot of plants. My fish, Fishboy used to nip at his fins last year and stopped, however, his fins have gotten worse lately and I think this is more than just nipping. He isn't lethargic he swims as much as always, and he has a big appetite. I feed him once everyday. The water is consistently at 78-80 degrees Fahrenheit as well. Please tell me what's wrong with him and how I can help him! Thank you, I'm really worried about him.

Here are pictures of his fins, I can't get a super good photo because he moves every time the camera focuses. He's red and blue, I got him from PetSmart around two years ago.

Hi! I think he's nipping his fins... unless you have any sharp objects in the tank. If so, I'd remove them imidiately. BTW, his tank looks great! I hope the best for him!

I agree with the previous commenter, it look like he’s either nipping his own fins, or tearing them on some item in the tank. Rough or sharp edges to ornaments or very dense and bristly fake plants can do that, I noticed you have a rock structure in there from PetSmart, I work there, and if I remember correctly, that one has bristled “grass” if he swims low through there that might do it, I would pull that fake grass off just to be safe. And check all the other fake plants to make sure they aren’t dense and bristly. All the others I can see look smooth, I usually recommend going with silk or live plants for a betta. But your tank looks beautiful, and so does your boy!
