So I work at wal-mart in the pet department (before you yell at me, know that I actually take very good care of my fish unlike some other stores). Yesterday I came in around 1pm and found this:

Some idiot kids must have came in the night before, after I left, and decided it would be a fun idea to put FOUR bettas in the same container...

I've worked the pet department for about a year and a half and have only seen people do this a couple times before, but only by putting two bettas together... luckily I was usually able to find them before they killed each other.

Anyways I promptly separated them out into their own containers... some of them aren't in great condition, but at least they aren't dead :|

I don't know what's wrong with some people..

I came across something like that once at Walmart. Two in the same cup. Neither was hurt, but I made sure to get them into their own cups. Usually I'm shy, but I had no problem grabbing a fishnet from the sink and scooping one of the fish out. Some people shouldn't be allowed to touch animals.

poor babies. ;n; i'd totally get them, but only after complaining loudly about how the bettas should be watched better because of brats doing crap like that. :I
The problem is that they combine pet department with paper and chemicals... which is on the complete other side of the store, and we usually only have one of us from those departments at the store at a time because walmart is cheap and won't hire more people >.<

I try to watch them as best as I can though, they're the first thing I check every day I get to work.

When I got there that day I looked at the bettas.... there were 6 containers empty, no bettas. I immediately knew what happened and started looking around, found the four together on a top shelf a few feet away... still don't know what happened to the other three from the containers though :/

;n; poor things.

i have the funny feeling that poor boy with the tattered fins will be there a while. just frown knowing the walmart here, the ones with tattered fins like that go last, or die first. ;n; it makes me wish i had more money, because i have a tank already set up(was a just-in-case when i got Todd from a breeder. never know when they'll be sneaky and ship a sibling!), and fin issues are a specialty of mine. :I

gah.... i gotta say, keep an eye out on them all. fighting is stressful. stressed fish get sick quicker.

I could never work at a department store that sold bettas! (Our WM no longer sells live animals) I would just want to take them all home!

I won't yell at you, you seem compassionate enough to know what's best for the fish! Sometimes you just cannot control the idiots that come in for thrills. :/

yeah. i'm glad SOMEONE who works at walmart cares about the fishies. ;n; at mine, i'd have to complain before the water would be changed. :I i gave in and bought one boy who was fought. almost no fin, stressed to the point of being dull brown with horrid stress stripes, bloated, Swim Bladder issues. he developed columnaris and stringy gunk from his gills soon after i brought him home... he died two days later on valentine's day. :I

Someone did something similar at a local shop a year or so back. They dropped a female guppy into a male crowntail jar just because she was deformed. The difference there was that the staff were completely uncaring. :( Good on you for doing something, Almost, instead of eh-ing the way they did.

And yes, I made them give me the guppy girl. :p

At the Wal-mart where I work, someone managed to smuggle in a crayfish (think small lobster) and dropped it in the goldfish tank. Around 6 became mincemeat overnight. The other employees were more amused than anything. There's nobody who's tied permanently to the pet department. :( I was hired shortly afterwards and hearing about it made me sick. :/

The ditches by the store flood and become crayfish homes, so it's not unusual to see them in the parking lot. In fact, I believe that one of the cart guys has a personal vendetta with a particular crayfish. So I suspect these hooligans just happened upon the clawed terror and played a spur-of-the-moment prank.

Also, I work with the eggs and we have some bandits that like to steal one egg from each carton. I don't particularly mind as we can always refill them and the depleted cartons of (perfectly good) eggs can go to the feed-the-poor program that the store supposedly does. :)

It's the "group mentality". I doubt one kid came in by hisself and did that. People in groups are capable of awful things.

I complained to walmart three times in a week and a half about the bettas care,,, finally got some spring water and added it myself,,,, then told them anout it again. Tonight I stopped to check on them, three of them actually flared as they swam since they had enou water to actually move.
